The housing head fake, part 362

"The housing market took a big step back in the month of May. There's no disputing that.

New home sales plunged 33% from April. Existing home sales dropped 2% and were worse than expected. May housing starts numbers reported last week were equally dismal: Starts for single-family homes plummeted 17%."

200,000 could lose out on homebuyer tax credit

"Nearly 200,000 homebuyers could lose out on the $8,000 tax credit because they can't get deals done by the June 30 deadline.

What did they do wrong? They tried to take advantage of the distressed properties flooding the market."

New home sales plummet to record low

"New home sales plummeted to a record low in May, the first month following the expiration of the homebuyer tax credit. This snapped a two-month streak of gains.

New home sales declined 32.7% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 300,000 last month, down from an downwardly revised 446,000 in April, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. Sales year-over-year fell 18.3%."

Banks seizing more foreclosed homes

"Banks are seizing more foreclosed homes even as the number of people falling behind on their mortgages is declining.

Bank repossessions hit a record monthly high in May, according to RealtyTrac, the online marketer of foreclosed properties. Lenders took back 93,777 properties, up 1% from the previous month's record and 44% from the same period a year earlier."
