Vandals using vacant homes as party pads

"Mesa police and code compliance officers are battling aftershocks from the Valley housing market's meltdown.

Police in east Mesa noticed a 'flare up' earlier this month in vacant houses being broken into and vandalized by teenagers looking for a place to hold parties. The vandalized houses included a winter home near La Sendas, a vacant rental house near Banner Baywood Medical Center and a house in foreclosure.

Code compliance officers, meanwhile, are tackling maintenance problems at vacant houses that include green pools and overgrown weeds. Some problems are so severe, posing serious risks to health, that the city hired contractors to make repairs and billed homeowners."
