"A scenic heritage trail reminiscent of vintage Route 66 through Arizona could eventually connect metro Phoenix to Grand Canyon National Park if Surprise officials have their way.
A straight shot north on Interstate 17 is the route most Grand Canyon-bound tourists take when departing from the Valley.
But that path misses many of the state's off-the-beaten-path attractions, and, in some cases, forces travelers to make day trips out of what could be overnight stays en route to the famous landmark."
